The book of nonsense Edward Lear 9781177135818 Books

This edition appears to be an attempt by someone using CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform to reproduce (and profit therefrom) an original publication by Little Brown and Company. Some of the initial pages are indeed facsimiles, as are the illustrations interspersed throughout, but the rest -- the original publisher's introduction and Leer's text -- appears to have been scanned and run through an OCR program, resulting in disarranged words and lines and abundant misinterpreted letters, numbers, and punctuation marks. The text is scattered with randomly unreadable combinations of characters. There is no evidence that any of it was ever proofread.
This edition is worthless as a collection of Lear's texts. Because it was a gift given beyond the 30 day return limit, the receiver will content herself cutting out the illustrations for the children to play with, and discard the book.

The book of nonsense Edward Lear 9781177135818 Books Reviews

If I could, I would give two separate ratings 5 stars for Lear's whimsy and 1 star for the publisher. This particular edition is terrible (cover pictures a path through the woods). The print is very, very small. The selections run together with little or no space between them. There are no illustrations! Edward Lear deserves better. All I can say is that you get what you pay for...don't waste your money on this edition!
This a fun read.. very entertaining.
Fun little nonsense sayings for a lightened heart and funny sayings. This e-book is quite interesting and fun to read since most of the snips are nonsensical if you have a sense of humor they will become stuck in your head and you will repeat them to yourself over and over. I found two in the first three pages.
One of the residents here at the senior complex where I live is a limrick fan. He is always trying to write limricks about people who live here or events that happen. Sometimes he is quite successful and has a good one, but not always. He inspired me to try my hand at this game. I got this book to see some limricks from the past. Good tool for learning about limricks. I learned from it and enjoyed it very much. LIMRICKS ARE FUN.
This was a gigando rip-off! It does not even contain the "The Owl and the Pussycat," which from the ad I expected to be included. The table of contents is a joke - listing the page numbers of each of the numbered limericks, which could have been written by almost any college freshman after 3 beers at the local bar. There was no attempt at editing, and often a limeick with one line at the bottom of one page would be continued at the top of the next.

This is a book which should be ashamed to list and should be obliged to refund all of the money paid by each person taken in by the listing.
I came to know some of the limericks by Edward Lear when I bought a book to my child aged seven at the time, a long time ago, a book in Italian edited by a long-since disappeared publishing house,in a series called "Tantibambini" ( many children). It contained the translation of some of Lear's best rhymes rendered in Italian. Each written page was matched by a drawing which pictured the main character of the limerick, in a grotesque and funny way, in garish colours. It was to my mind a small masterwork. We laughed so much at night looking at the book and reading the absurd descriptions of incredible creatures, that those memories are among the sweetest of that period long past. And after so many years I just came to believe that those obstreperous heteroclite old men and women (most are old, seldom are they young) are after all the most realistic one could describe, as this world is just so topsy turvy that what at first may seem most absurd is just the most realistic of the pictures of what exists, body and soul, under a slim cover of apparent seriousness. It is a marvellous landmark in the English tradition of nonsense, which is completely lacking in the Italian culture, of course for historical reasons - but one misses it. But recent history could just show that nonsense, in Italy, is just everyday chronicle. A most enjoyable little precious book.
Shame on this publisher. Really just a collection of limericks copied from the internet and not even put together well. It's true. Anyone can sell anything on these days.
